Foster Care Q&A
Mew is a foster based rescue without a physical facility. All of our cats are brought in and go directly to the home of a volunteer foster. It’s truly our biggest need at all times, because without fosters we can’t save the cats! As a foster parent, you are truly giving the gift of life. Mew will pay for vet care and supplies, so you only need to be able to provide a temporary loving environment until the cat is ready for adoption.
We have several different types of fostering situations to work with any schedule!
Kittens: Kitten fostering varies in length depending on the age of the kittens, ranging from a couple weeks up to 2 months on average. Kittens will come in groups the way they were born typically with 2-4.
Adult: Adults are a breeze to foster, and have an average length of stay of 1-2 months. Adults that go from a foster home into our Petco program will adopt within a week.
Backup: Backup fosters make their homes available for short term care when a regular foster home is on vacation or temporarily unavailable.
One-Week Observational: Some cats can be a quick turnaround or even go into our Petco in-store program. They just need approximately one week in a foster home to get them ready to be adopted.
Medical: Some cats may have medical conditions which require extra attention or recovery time. The length of stay for these cats varies. If you have medical experience (vet tech or nursing for example) this is helpful but not required and we can train.
Bottle Babies: This is the most urgently needed type of fostering. Babies who have lost their mamma need feeding every 2-4 hours for a short time. Without a feeder or a replacement mamma the kittens will die.
How long does it take to foster?
This depends on so many factors that we can’t give an actual time frame. However we have several different types of fostering that can work for even the most difficult schedules.
What kind of space do i NEED?
You can foster in virtually any home. For the first few days, you will need a space where you can keep the foster pets seperated, After that, they can free roam if you allow.
wHAT DOES IT COST TO FOSTER?
Mew pays for supplies and vet care. Some fosters do choose to pay for some supplies, but this is a personal choice.
What if i travel?
We have a great group of fosters that can offer to keep your foster cat(s), or you are allowed to use your personal resident sitter for the foster cats in your home.
